south central WI | We have our dry cows custom fed. We dry off once a week on Wednesday. He sold his cows in 2019 I think, and shortly after we approached him. We are limited on space so having them fed there give us more room for milking cows. He's close, roughly 7 miles I believe, so we haul them there at dry off, and haul the close ups back on the backhaul. I don't know what we pay. Sometimes we buy his haylage (we harvest it), and sometimes we haul ours there and store it in his bunkers. We do the same with our heifers, but that's roughly 25-30 miles away. I think if the next generation wants to come in, we will expand and make room for everything on the home farm. At some point we may anyway, but for now it works out well and lightens the daily load a little. | |
