Depends on the ground. If it's well drained, frost heaving isn't much of an issue. If your soil drains pretty well, and you can overdig, then backfill maybe 2 ft of sand, you should be fine. If it's an area water will retain before freezing, you'll have heaving.
A few years ago, we added some concrete in a dryer/bin nook, nowhere for water to drain to. We used a posthole digger and went about 4 ft down, hit sand, dropped a 4" pipe in and put a grate on the end, poured concrete. Only retains solid water. | |
