You've gotten lots of advice, but no answers.

Depends on the ground. If it's well drained, frost heaving isn't much of an issue. If your soil drains pretty well, and you can overdig, then backfill maybe 2 ft of sand, you should be fine. If it's an area water will retain before freezing, you'll have heaving.

A few years ago, we added some concrete in a dryer/bin nook, nowhere for water to drain to. We used a posthole digger and went about 4 ft down, hit sand, dropped a 4" pipe in and put a grate on the end, poured concrete. Only retains solid water.
