| Been kicking around the thought of trying a different approach to the rotation and am looking for others input. We do 500 acres to use a square number, equal parts corn and beans. We do 8-900 acres of custom harvesting as well. My thought was to cut out the soybeans and put in let's say 125 acres of small grains and put the other 125 that was beans into corn. Thought process with that is this far north it is hard to get a good cover crop behind beans, and I think they could be a good thing to integrate. I am not saying it's impossible just much harder. By integrating a small grain, it would allow the neighboring dairy to empty their pit in the fall instead of waiting until their custom guy who is usually running behind costing them time in the spring, as well as getting 125 of our own acres taken off before beans are ready. In order to not lose too much nutrients that is where the covers would come in. Corn on corn would be on a 4-year rotation, 4 on and 1 off for small grains. Doing custom beans can be a headache at times so my thought was by cutting beans out of our rotation it would allow to get other's beans done sooner and possibly pick some more custom work up in the process. My experience is as long as you can keep rocks out of the combine you can make some money, I know others have different opinions on custom and am just sharing my own. Guess I am wondering if anyone has had success with a small grain, corn rotation or pitfalls in my thought process. Any and all opinions and inputs appreciated.
