Mine has coulters set pretty shallow so not exactly at surface level but I want the bulk of the early N close to the row here, that way the roots find it.
Find some cheap carbon based N stabilizer to put in if running on the surface or shallow, can help if conditions aren't favorable after planting.
I run at least 60 N with 10-34-0 and thio haven't had any problems in normal growing conditions.
