Southwest Illinois | The problem is dealers want to spend as much on treatment as the cost of the seed. You can bet that the guy treating never over applies. They also tend to push more products than you need.
Virtually every dealer around me has a standard treatment including fungicide and insecticide. I always asked, "what insects are we after" as we do not have bean leaf beetles and I never get a straight answer. We have never treated with an insecticide and not one time in 40 plus years did I ever regret not treating with an insecticide. Obviously there are areas where insects are an issue so it isn't a one size fits all. Fully how $14 beans suck the brains out of guys who get suckered into buying a bunch of treatment they don't or rarely need. For us it is about stand establishment and that is it. By the time a soy plant is at the 1st trifoliate they insecticide is so diluted through the plant it will not kill much. Dealers who treat have seen treating be their biggest source of profit. It's science, but it isn't rocket science. | |
