| Yes from the statisticians I have listened to that is a factor. They also mentioned that a significant number of people vote to keep someone they dislike out rather than voting to get someone in. That is normally a significant factor but in this election they believed it would have been more significant than normal due to the extreme hatred and fear created by both sides against their opponent. The people that were driven to this hatred are the type of voters that are driven to vote to keep their opponent out.
That is evident in a sense even on here as many of the posts on this topic are much more based on the negative views towards the opponent than the virtues of their own candidate.
There are lots of factors that will come into play and, like you say, many people aren’t very good with statistics. Unfortunately that makes it quite easy to include factors that reinforce a preferred outcome and exclude others and mislead the public. That happens all the time.
It will be interesting to see what the final numbers are and it will be interesting to see if some will make excuses for and exclude a certain possibility if the numbers don’t end up fitting the historic statistics.
