Sioux County, NWIA | I would be at a loss to recommend a good drill press, aside from some old industrial unit back when quality meant something. Newer Asian made drill presses are of pretty questionable quality.
I would suggest put the drill press money into a Bridgeport mill or one of the horde of BP clones. Try to avoid Chinese made. Taiwanese seems to be ok. Even if the unit is not of the very greatest quality or is somewhat worn, it will serve you better than most of these modern jobber drill presses. After I bought a knee mill, my drill press seldom gets used.
For a lathe, I would look for a decent 16x60.
Main thing on any precision machine tool is wear of the slideways. Usually you can compare the condition of highly traveled areas with areas that seldom or every get used and get a really good idea of wear. | |
