SE MN | If you don't want to just buy new mid-level stuff like Precision Mathews, then you should educate yourself and start watching industrial auctions. You can learn almost anything about manual machines on youtube and Practical Machinist. The key to industrial auctions is to always go look at the item in person and be patient. You will see worn out stuff bring top dollar and you'll see perfect gems sell for peanuts. I just paid about $3k for a Sharp VH-3 knee mill in very good shape with an ancient but working DRO.
If you are working by yourself, I would suggest skipping the drill press and get a big heavy knee mill with box ways. A drill press is fine if you need something simple that other people can use. I also have a Wilton gear reduction drill press. No more slipping belt but it could break your arm if you let it. | |
