Subject: RE: $30 for tractor overhaul

Pittsburg, Kansas
Yes and I noticed the kid rode on the back of the plow going to the field. Probably several things not "approved" now were done back then.

How many of us as kids rode for hours on the left fender of the tractor while our dad's were plowing or other field work? I had a thing happen with my youngest son in that respect. Had him on the left fender of a Long 1100 tractor doing field work going around a corner. When I made the turn there was something that caught my attention (don't remember what) and I pushed in on the clutch as I was looking the other direction. Put my left hand out to grab him but it was too late. He fell off and hit the soft plowed ground and was not hurt. But he just barely missed the foot step to get on the tractor and had I not noticed and stopped the tractor left rear tire would have ran right over him. Lucky break. I would guess he was 5 years old. Just on the edge of being able to sit up there "relatively" safely. I think I had just taken him to "ride a few rounds" then back to the house for him.

Surprising more kids didn't get killed back then than what were. I guess we learned pretty quickly. Maybe that was the good part of it. Many of us were doing field work by the time we were 8 or 10.
