Tagging new born calves can be challenging with problems as you describe. I pinch the applicator pin behind the tag to help shove the tag off the pin. Next, I check the tag to ensure the play is through the ear and caught on the backside of the ear.
Sometime the ear folds into the lower jaw of the applicator. A little extra care is required and based upon the squirming reaction of the cake it must be quite painful. Popping the ear , tag and pin from the lower jaw is required here. Then shove the tag and ear off the pin.
