I feel your pain. I have the same trouble. For some reason the pin doesn't roll down quite far enough to latch on the tagger itself. So what happens then is when you try to punch through the ear, the tag point is actually hitting the tagger. I have to hold the little latch tight with my other hand. It's a real pain.
