This is pretty much true. Schools here are paid for through property tax, but the BIG problem is that Nebraska went to a 'unified' school, meaning that my property tax $$$ go to help fund the kids in Warren Buffett's neighborhood, but none of his property taxes come to ours, the reason being that the powers that be came up with a formula that makes a sandhill rancher who drives a 20 year old pickup is 'rich' and can afford more taxes, but Buffet is 'poor' so he gets subsidized by us in the rural areas. Taxes literally went up 4X what they were (in terms of the size of the check I have to write) in just a couple years when the State went to a 'unified' district.

A much better way to pay for schools, IMO, would be a 'houshold' tax, where every 'household' pays the same amount of tax for the school. Then, when they want to build a Superdome that costs $20 million, it won't be an extra $20 for the 5000 people who live in town, and an extra $2000 for the 500 that do not. If your income is low enough part of the school tax could be refunded, but everyone should have to pay at least a little, even if it is in the form of reduced benefits. Too often those who pay nothing get the say of where the money of those who pay for everything gets spent.
