Artificial Intelligence, as we use the term, has been around since at least the 1950s. Machine Learning is a subset of AI that uses statistical algorithms; Deep Learning is a subset of ML that uses neural networks. ML has been used for years to detect spam, evaluate credit applicants, create predictive models, etc. DL tackles the same sort of problems as ML, but does it in a different way. The recent AI buzz centers on Large Language Models, like Chat GPT. These are, essentially, ML models trained on enormous data sets. The only really new innovation of LLMs that I can see is their conversational nature. They might pass early versions of the Turing Test for intelligence. |
