I agree that water use by cover crops can negatively affect the next crop.
My perspective is that small grains taken to harvest can be more beneficial (in terms of soil health, water quality and cropping system economics) than small grains grown as cover crops in some cropping systems.

In the article, I mentioned cover crops in the context of soil typically getting denser the first few years after tillage is stopped. This is part of why new no-till systems sometimes need a few years before they start firing on all cylinders.
Have you experienced this? Do you have any recommendations for how to reduce risk during the early years of a no-till system (or get over the hump faster)?
