NW Ohio | When I build my planting prescriptions I go only off soil type. Most of my fields are 2-3 soil types but the slope changes for each soil type i.e. 0-3%, 3-6% ect. Long story short each of these soil types with slope are a different zone. Is what I have found in the last 20 years of writing prescriptions is it seems to me grids are not as representative as the soil type, since the same grid could have 2 sometimes 3 soil types in it. I also have come to the conclusion that within in the same soil type I have wet ares that if I go off of yield data (wet holes yielding less do to less plants emerging) I will be under planting a zone that has the water holding capacity to support the higher population. I base my prescriptions off the soil water holding capacity and depth of top sol for each zone, I then use the seed companies recommendations for each hybrids planting populations. This system has worked well for me just remember that planter needs time to make big seed population changes, I try to keep the zones to where they are only changing by 2000-4000 seeds/acre on corn (30" row) and and 7,000-10,000 seeds per acre on soybeans (15" row)
