The only time we retract the knives is if we are planning to unroll some hay. We will bale some alfalfa sometimes we want to supplement cows with, and not chop it so it unrolls better in a long ribbon.
Edit to add: yes, we love cornstalk and milo stubble bales fed in a TMR that were chopped in a baler. They mix up immediately, and the bunks are cleaner. We quit hiring a custom grinder after using a chopping baler.
