Here is a great reason not to do that. One year I put rye in the big box on my drill, covered up every other hole to make 15" rows. Put radishes and something else in small box and they went in between the rye rows. Everything died over the winter except the rye, water then ran down in between the rye rows resulting in washouts in many areas. I just spread rye now with my fertilizer spreader at about 40+ lbs and very happy with what happens, plus way cheaper to do.
