It was a lot easier to be poor in the 80's. Some friends and I were just discussing high school in a small town. We were poor (I had 10 siblings on a 350 farm) but most were so we didn't know it. Mom had garden and chickens, lots of free labor, etc. I remember dad being irritated with the constant direction of the markets.
