I had the pan off of an ST251 a long time ago. I don't remember having to cut anything out of the way but it seems like I had to lift the front of the engine to get the pan out.

If the pan was off you/they could- remove a rod and main cap to look a the bearings/ look at the cam/and see if any piston coolers are broke off. I'd probably check liner protrusion for the heck of it too as easy as it is. That should give you a better idea of how far you want to go.

I've never done it- but people have fixed just one hole at a time. With the pan off and the heads already off it shouldn't be much labor to pull the problem liner and this will give you an idea of how pitted the liners are.

The one I had apart had all the liners pitting/cavitating about half way down at the 12:00 and 6:00 position when looking down at the engine from the front.

Every engine I've had apart is never as simple of a repair as first thought. I always found something else or the "while I'm here I might as well" phrase gets used a lot.
