I did exactly that. I have a Kinze planter and bought backing plates to put with the soybean plates. Planted rye on 30” rows, then injected hog manure between the rye rows. In the spring I planted corn on top of the manure strips that were between the rye rows. I really liked it for corn. I believe you have a lower chance of aleopathy problems.
Having said all that, I stopped using cover crops. I don’t have an erosion problem since I do striptill and I believe my soil biology is high since I use quite a bit of hog and cattle manure.
Cover crops take an extra level of management. From what I have seen, there is the potential of gaining a little each year and then you have something bad happen that negates the multi year gain.
