Rings are damaged or possibly broke, sleeve o rings are 43 years old and possible protrusion problems. Time for rods and main bearings anyway. Actually a reasonable engine to OH without ecm and pollution control expenses. Either fix it right or put it together and send it down the road. I would fix it myself.
