S Illinois | I see this line quite often. "Why should we spend dollars and sacrifice American lives to protect a spoiled and socialist Europe"
Directly following WW2 that was the case. But the conflicts that have occurred since dwarf any amount of military money spent in Europe. Between the Berlin airlift and the Ukrainian war, the US has spent vast amounts of moneys in SE Asia and the Middle East. Not sure how much Korea, Vietnam, Iraq-twice, Afghanistan was aimed at protecting Europe.
The other issue is the GDP metric. Would the US have spent less if the EU had spent more? Or do we still like our boats and planes and weapons and like calling all the shots when it comes to the world wide policing. Does the US buy half as many aircraft carriers or planes? Do we cut our nuclear stockpile or limit the number of submarines. | |
