I can help with part of your question. I don't know how Ed manages his stops out on the road, but a Tesla will compute how much energy it will use on the route you enter and will advise where and when to stop to charge. One issue I did not understand when we first got ours is it seemed like it had us stopping way more often than needed. I finally figured out why. The car will take additional charge much much faster at a lower state of battery. So it actually computes sometimes that having you stop more often, taking on just a bit of juice at a time, will get you to your destination faster than charging to a higher battery level but stopping fewer times.

For example, it may have you stop four times, when the battery gets down to 5%, filling it only to 30% each time, than say stopping once along the way and filling it to 80 or 90 percent. The charging speed drops as the battery fills up and might actually make it to your destination earlier by making the four stops.

I have done it both ways, depending on where I am headed, how much time I have to make the trip, and the amenities available near Superchargers along the route.
