East Central South Dakota | Thank you for all the replies. This board can be a resource if people try to be polite and kind. There have been some excellent talking points made on both sides of the issue. Some really good thought-provoking replies. Has it cleared up the issue for me-----no, probably has made me more indecisive than before. LOL At the end of the day sometimes you just have to admit you don't have all the answers to all the questions and there is a heck of lot of questions to be answered on the tariff issue. We get a front row seat in a world event, and we will get to see if the policy was correct or a shipwreck.
If I had to draw a conclusion from the discussion, for a country whose economy is largely based on consumption, tariffs have the potential to fuel inflation if a lot of things don't happen to soften the policy. That being said, there are also some bad actors out there that have taken advantage. We have to accept we have some enemies as trading partners. We have destroyed some domestic industries, and we have a lot of products that, for national security, have to be manufactured back within our shores. Our nationalistic pride and competitive nature make us want to inflict some pain on those we perceive have put the screws to us by the trade imbalance. Pain inflicting measures have some merits and needs some discussion, but at the end of the day, we have to make sure that our nationalistic pride and competitive nature doesn't inflict the pain on ourselves with no results of improving trade imbalances and/or world trade in general.
Thanks again to everyone for some awesome replies.
